A dry 2026/27 season is forecast. Irrigation equipment and pumps are likely to be in demand.
A second-hand tractor, a borehole pump or a set of drip lines can decide a season. The used-equipment market is busy and mostly informal — which is why the first question is always who owns it.
- Tractors and trucks should come with a registration book in the seller's name. No book, no sale.
- Hours and service history. Ask for the hour-meter reading and receipts for the last services. Check for oil leaks, smoke on start-up and play in the steering.
- Implements. Discs, ploughs, planters and boom sprayers: look for cracked frames, worn bearings and missing parts.
- Imported equipment. Ask for the import and duty papers.

Irrigation matters more this year
Forecasters expect below-normal rain from October to December across most of the country, and dry spells through to March 2027.1 Winter wheat was grown on a record 126,394 hectares under irrigation this year.2 Pumps, pipes, drip kits, centre pivots and water tanks will be in demand — and so will the people who can install and repair them.
